Dr. Zaheer Aslam is Principal Investigator/Sub-Investigator for Gulfcoast Clinical Research Center as well as the Associate Medical Director for the Dual Diagnosis Program at Park Royal Behavioral Health Services. Dr. Aslam earned bachelor degrees in Medicine and Surgery from Allama Iqbal Medical College in Pakistan. He continued his training and studies in both internal medicine and psychiatry in Pakistan and at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom. During his studies, he was awarded both the Eli Lilly fellowship award as well as the Pfizer fellowship award. He completed his residency in general psychiatry at the University of North Dakota and completed a fellowship in Addictive Disorders at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
His experience includes a number of years at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Aslam acted in a variety of capacities at the VAMC, including a staff psychiatrist in the Department of Addictive Disorders, Director of the Opiate Agonist Therapy Program, and Medical Director for the Department of Addictive Disorders. He was also a consultant for North Memorial Medical Center, where he provided inpatient treatment and was a consult liaison for psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, and electro convulsive therapy.
Dr. Aslam has also owned and led various practices over the years in both Minnesota and Florida. These psychiatry groups have conducted clinical trials and provided psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and a variety of therapies. Dr. Aslam’s practices are known for their creative program developments for both mental illness and chemical development.
Dr. Aslam was also the Medical Director for programs associated with Meridian Behavioral Health Services, which included residential treatment programs for both men and women, as well as a methadone maintenance treatment program. As Medical Director, he was responsible for overseeing nursing staff, counselors, and psychiatrists, as well as developing new programs, policies and protocols.
Beyond his practical experience, Dr. Aslam has substantial research and academic experience. He is an Assistant Professor with the University of Minnesota, School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry. There he lectures on addictive disorders and is a clinical supervisor and mentor of Addiction Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine fellows. For two years, he was the Course Director for Addiction Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program. His research includes work in the treatment of binge eating disorders, assessment of alcohol withdrawal syndrome, longitudinal neuro-imaging in recovering alcoholics, depression & various other CNS conditions. He is the author of a number of publications on addiction treatment, management of alcohol dependence, and eating disorders.
Dr. Aslam is licensed to practice in multiple states, including Florida, North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and holds additional qualifications in addictive disorders. He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry.
